What is a traumatic brain injury?

Acquired brain injury is damage to brain that occurs anytime after birth. One type of acquired brain injury is traumatic brain injury, or TBI. TBI is the result of a sudden injury to the brain. Examples of TBI are closed head injuries or open wounds incurred as the result of vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, violence, sports injuries, etc. The effect of the injury varies depending on the extent to which the brain was damaged. In severe cases, the injury could lead to severe disability or death.
